Covid-19 update in Cancun
If you are planning to travel to Mexico, here is what you need to know and expect if you want to visit during the Covid-19 pandemic. Mexico is open to travelers. It is not necessary to provide a negative PCR test or quarantine on arrival, although most resorts ask guests to complete health questionnaires. American travelers should remember that they will need a negative Covid-19 test result taken 72 hours or less prior to travel to return to the U.S. The U.S. Embassy says PCR and antigen test results are available reliably within 72 hours in Mexico.
Travelers to the country must complete a health declaration form and scan the QR code that it generates upon arrival. There is no need to do a pre-departure test or do any kind of quarantine. Those concerned that they may have symptoms should ask for the health organization Sanidad Internacional. Mexico has a four-level traffic light restriction system, with red meaning maximum restrictions, orange limiting capacity in public spaces and at work to 30%, yellow allowing all work to resume and public meetings to be held , and green which means there are no restrictions in place.
See a color-coded map here. As of July 29, most states were classified as yellow and orange. Quintana Roo, where the most popular tourist destinations of Cancun and Playa del Carmen are located, was listed as orange. Baja California Sur, home to Cabo San Lucas, and Mexico City were also listed as orange. Visitors are likely to encounter different situations depending on where in the country they are traveling to, with local restrictions and curfews that vary. See the Local Resources section of the US Embassy website for specific information.
